One of the most iconic and seminal Australian albums of all time has turned 50!
Skyhooks groundbreaking, Living In The 70’s not only captured the essence of a generation but also redefined Australian music, earning its place in history as one of the nation’s most celebrated records.
The album spent an incredible 16 weeks at the top of the Australian album charts and became the highest selling Australian album at the time, solidifying the bands' legacy there and then.
Produced by Ross Wilson and featuring artwork by Niels Hutchison, Living In The 70’s impact resonates five decades later with its songs seared into the collective memory of every Aussie.
Founding member, guitarist and sole writer of 9 of the albums 10 tracks, Greg Macainsh says of the album “When Skyhooks were recording the Living in The 70's album in 1974, our producer, Ross Wilson worked us hard. I remember when we complained about having to repeat some take or performance, he’d say “Well you better get it right ‘cos you will have to live with it for the rest of your lives (or something like that). We all laughed about that at the time but fifty years later people still remember the record so I guess Ross was absolutely right!”
First single, the albums title track, Living In The 70’s, peaked at #28 and is perhaps the ultimate song that defines the 70’s itself, while Horror Movie is the single that really saw the album take off. It debuted and spent two consecutive weeks at #1 and has become arguably their most recognised song.
Track 5, “You Just Like Me ‘Cos I’m Good in Bed,” was, in 1975, highly controversial and banned on commercial radio nationwide. However, at 11.00am on January 19, 1975 in Studio 206 at the ABC in Sydney, the track become the first song ever to be played on the brand new 2JJ radio station.
Infamously, that moment was captured on film for all time.

Skyhooks’ fearless attitude and knack for connecting with audiences was undisputed. Their bold lyrics, theatrical performances and genre defying sound revolutionised the local music industry and cemented their place as one of Australia’s most influential bands.. Despite a total of six tracks being banned from airplay on commercial radio, the edgy and irreverent themes on Living In The 70’s struck a chord with listeners across the nation.
The album’s legacy has continued to grow over the years. It was ranked No. 9 in the book
100 Best Australian Albums in 2010, featured at No. 75 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 Albums of All Time in 2011, and its title track was named among the most Australian songs of all time by Triple M’s “Ozzest 100.” Additionally, Living in the 70's was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s prestigious Sounds of Australia registry in 2011.
“Living in the 70's is more than just an album; it’s a time capsule of a pivotal era in Australian history,” says Ross Wilson. “Fifty years on, its message and energy remain as powerful as ever.”

Like many, my love for symphonic metal can be traced back to the debut of Nightwish. Before that, however, Angra, Blind Guardian and After Forever had captivated my ears with their blending of orchestras, heavy melodies, and starting a dangerous hobby of peak soundstage in headphones.

Just over four years ago I ‘met’ Joey Talmage (Hoody Time) - the American rapper/hip-hop artist via reddit's r/newzealand sub ahead of his tour, and subsequent emigration to New Zealand. I managed to catch up with Hoody, and new found collaborators Bo Ade-Simpson (Bosho) and Max Duncan prior to the literal New Year release of MUSIC.
Back in August, ahead of the release of Empire of the Blind - Mark Derricutt sat down with David White to discuss all things Heathen.
Misplaced somewhere among the madness of 2020; just prior to it's release - I found myself on a cold rainy night, waiting for TOM NAUMAN - guitarist for long standing German Power Metal masters PRIMAL FEAR to talk about the release of METAL COMMANDO - the bands thirteenth release.

Doom metal is not always about sorrow and gloom, but can often be an emotional journey of reflection and healing - Brett Campbell of Arkansas doom metallers Pallbearer talks to Mark Derricutt about their latest album Forgotten Days.
