Sydney Bridge Upside Down

Sydney Bridge Upside Down is Taki Rua's production of David Ballantyne's novel of the same name first published in 1968. A compelling, at times unsettling play that tells of Harry Baird's childhood and the characters and experiences that shaped the adult he became, through his now slowly fracturing mind.

The bare white stage, but for a sharp cliff like angle to the audience's left provided the perfect back drop, it's minimalism able give context to integral moments in Harry's life which are woven throughout the play utilising an impressive combination of vocal agility, imagery, soundtrack, live video feed and whiteboard use of the stage. This multi-media approach combined with the impressive physicality of the performers, brilliantly captured the fragmented images of Harry's deteriorating grip on reality.

The performers were incredible, utilising every inch of the stage with calculated abandon. Aaron Cortesideserves a special mention as Mr Wiggins, his lecherous, looming butcher made for a mesmerisingly uncomfortable watch.

It's been appropriately described as a ‘sinister love story'. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. A performance and production that will stay with you for some time to come.
