Beth Stelling

Artist: Beth Stelling

Date / Venue: Wednesday July 1st, 2015 - The Tuning Fork, Auckland

I'm a huge fan of heading to a comedy gig in the middle of winter. The alternative is just depressing: staying at home and watching social media news feed of friends frolicking in the sunshine in the northern hemisphere. Or in Cannes 'simply dying' from the heat... go find someone with a pool to complain to.

This bad attitude I have towards others enjoying themselves is reason why it is important to go to comedy during the colder months... if I don't get a laugh, winter is arduous and cold and I become bitter and twisted.

The Tuning Fork was the venue for Beth Stelling, a female comedian who originated from Ohio, but moved to L.A. 3 years ago to make her mark on the comedy circuit. The move to Cali has escalated 'sweet' Beth's fame and following. She's made appearances on Chelsea Lately and Jimmy Kimmel Live, among many other revered comedy shows.

Beth has an arsenal of talent when it comes to stand up, and I would go so far as to rate her show last night as one of the best I've seen in years. Her topics spanned from tilted ovaries, to long distance relationships and the stories woven in-between felt earnest and unique.

When it came to delivery, Beth's performance was outstanding. She has monotone voice throughout which lends to the darker and dryer witted jokes, but also a demeanour which is endearing when exploring more personal stories.

The audience appreciated her banter, and we felt connected. Beth had a sense of making us feel at ease, and uncomfortable at the same time. Her self-effacing attitude in juxtapose with a potty tongue are the perfect combination for a good laugh.

For all these reasons, and many more, I would absolutely recommending getting your butt on a seat in front of Beth.
