Man, that was fun!
The last time I saw a loud, hairy, power trio from Texas was ZZ Top at the springs back in ’87. They were loud, but Wo Fat at the Whammy was the sort of loud that wraps you up and shakes you till the band stops playing--I really like that sort of loud!!
After the openers, heavy/power blues duo Deadbeat Dads and Aucklanders Bloodnut warmed the punters up with much wonderful riffage it was time for the psycho/doom Texans to take the stage.
With Kent Stump on gat/vocal; Michael Walter on drums; Zack Busby on bass, they lit the fuse. Opening with The Black Code and proceeding to pummel us for nearly an hour and a half with a mix of brutally heavy riffs and slow psychedelic passages, with more than enough groove to keep the crowds' heads keepin’ time all through the set.
Bands like this, at clubs like Whammy, with good and appreciative crowds like last night really is a visceral experience.
So, to sum it all up...
Man--that was fun!!
