The Internet Review
L.A. based Neo Soul group The Internet are the hottest ticket in Music-ville right now. Spear headed by ex-Odd Future members’ singer Sydney Bennett aka Syd tha Kyd and Matt Martians on keys/vocals the group breathed life into Auckland’s Powerstation, the crowd gently coerced by the band’s slick Soul infused music.
Syd let loose with the obligatory greeting remarking “You know this one” as the familiar sound of Dontcha blared it was almost like a cue for the crowd to go wild. “Get your hands up” she shouted motioning to the crowd.
“Now she wanna fuck with me” a recognised line from the popular song Get Away from their new album Ego Death, Syd swaying hypnotically onstage as the band played in perfect sync the synergy electric.
The Internet are a true musicians band, for me this was a very enjoyable gig. Even if you hadn’t heard their music the musicianship alone was worth the price of admission. The band was tighter than the Auckland housing market while Syd’s vocals floated seamlessly on well known tracks Just Sayin, Special Affair and monster hit Girl – sublime stuff.
The Internet are one of those group’s who are destined for bigger things, even when things went adversely out of control like guitarist Steve Lacy breaking a guitar string or the kind Kiwi Samaritan who was called back on to the stage for helping the band with their ‘smoking’ situation, you couldn’t help but smile.
All in all a great night accentuated by some of the best musicians and tunes my ears have graced this year – If you ever get the chance to see them play then abandon everything and go.
