New Music Review - The Temper Trap 'Thick As Thieves' - June 2016

With a number of festivals under their belt and a couple of music award nominations, Australasian Indie-Rock band The Temper Trap finally released their third full-length album. 

Thick As Thieves has been three years in the making, following the sad departure of guitarist and fellow founding member of Lorenzo Sillitto in 2013. Somewhat of a departure from their last album Thick As Thieves reverts back to their Indie roots leaving the electro-pop influences behind them. 

The album kicks off with a title track of the same name; an upbeat kind of song, which sets the tone for the rest of the album. 

Burn and Fall Together are a couple of radio-ready singles showing off the band’s new sound.  You can really hear the influence of Pascal Gabriel (Goldfrapp, Ladyhawke) whom the band were very excited to work with. 

The majority of the album has a very anthemic feel, a guitar-driven set of songs in which the band hope to reach as many people as possible.  One such song, Tombestone provides and almost spiritual experience. There are echos of a Coldplay-esque refrain with Mandagi’s vocals climbing to new heights.

As the album progresses, the band dish up a few dynamic, compelling tracks like the pop influenced Riverina, and the romantic Lost that evoke the contagious pleasure of their Sweet Disposition. 

Ultimately Thick As Thieves will delight fans old and new.  After all this is what the album intended.
