/Presented By Secret Sounds
Secret Sounds are throwing a party you won’t want to miss at this year’s SXSW. The brains behind Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival have curated a stacked line-up of local and international talent, set to take over Australia House this March.
This year’s explosive line-up includes our very own Aussie dream girl Odette as well as Englishman on the rise Sam Fender, R&B mastermind Pink Sweat$, genre-bending Boy Azooga, Brisbane legends WAAX and riff rulers The Amazons.
The Line-Up
ARIA-nominated Odette captivates audiences from the moment she takes the stage, fluttering between spoken word and soulful vocals. Offering up deeply personal lyrics and arrangements circling soul, jazz and pop, Sydneysider Odette has stolen the hearts of fans near and far with her debut release, To A Stranger.
English singer-songwriter Sam Fender is a 22-year-old on the rise. Named as one of the BBC’s Sounds of 2018 and the recipient of the 2018 BRITs Critics’ Choice Award, Sam Fender has eased into 2019 with the world at his feet. Compared to the likes of Hozier and Ben Howard there is very little standing in the way of this Newcastle-native as he continues his rapid ascent, tackling topics of social and generational significance with thoughtful lyricism and commanding vocals.
Pink Sweat$ is an artist, songwriter and producer hailing from Philadelphia. With music rooted in R&B and soul,Pink Sweat$ strips back the typical genre-specific production to showcase melodic intricacy and lyrical prowess. After 7 years of working behind the scenes, Pink Sweat$ launched as a solo artist in July of 2018. His rapid rise has earned him recognition from the New York Times & Fader, ten separate entries in Spotify's US viral charts, and placement in Apple Music's 'A List R&B.'
Piloted by Davey Newington, a young man with much musical heritage, Boy Azooga are a four-piece from Cardiff (UK). Boy Azooga have come off the back of their biggest year yet, with the release of their debut album 1, 2, Kung Fu!. A celebration of many genres and contrasting styles, Newington refers to their shining debut as a “mixtape” of sorts. Taking inspiration from Sly & The Family Stone, Caribou, Black Sabbath and Outkast, Boy Azooga swing smoothly between filmic instrumental to churning, rave-tinged rock.
Australia’s most electrifying rock band, WAAX, are road warriors with an arsenal of killer songs. Having supported Aussie staples such as Violent Soho, Dune Rats and Ecca Vandal as well as international heavyweights Wolf Alice, Fall Out Boy and Biffy Clyro, WAAX have made a name for themselves as ‘a live band to be reckoned with’. With the February release of their latest track FU and a debut album on the way, it’s clear to see WAAX’s trajectory is on a stratospheric rise.
The Amazons are a four-piece rock outfit from Reading (UK) with riffs in spades. Packed with a stack of stadium-ready anthems, The Amazons’ self-titled debut album catapulted the band onto the scene in 2017 with a #8 spot on the UK Album Chart. In the same year, the lads were shortlisted for BBC Music Sound of 2017 and nominated for Q’s Best Breakthrough Act. Since then, the band have toured relentlessly, earning themselves a dedicated legion of fans from all corners of the globe.
