Auckland's Summer In The Square continues into 2017
/Auckland Live Summer in the Square launches back into its summer-long programme throughout January and February with live events, awesome activities and world-class entertainment for all. Aotea Square is the place to be this summer season!
Running until 24 February, highlights include performances by APO Young Achievers, a K-Pop Night, the adventurous Auckland Fringe Festival, and even more exceptional live-musicand hands-on gardening workshops.
Time to get busy in our city centre’s arts precinct.

Vintage Weekend | 13 - 15 January
Celebrating all things retro with big bands, classic cars, vintage markets, dance lessons, beauty demos, and an old-fashioned picnic contest.
Latin Fiesta | 20 – 22 January
Spreading over two stages, enjoy the sizzling sounds, countless dance styles, and tasty cuisine from Latin American.
APO Young Achievers | 13 – 17 February
A selection of fine young musicians and emerging talent entertain with music and song over five days. The musical tastes range from Brahms masterpieces to lush jazz, and full classical to swinging Latin styles.
K-Pop Night | 10 February
Fresh from LA, where she’s been dancing with Beyoncé and Parris Goebel, choreographer Rina Chae and her Street Candee crew storm Aotea Square with explosive moves. A rotating playlist of chart-topping K-pop hits, and a pop-up bar make for a great night in the city centre.
Hot Brown Honey Bloc Party | 11 February
Join the Honeys as they serve up an audacious platter of dance, comedy and hip hop. Lisa Fa’alafi, Hope One The Beatboxer, the bodacious Busty Beatz and special guest artists from Aotearoa will bring the heat. Their show Hot Brown Honey made The Guardian’s top ten list of 2016's most groundbreaking shows by women.
Auckland Fringe Festival at Aotea Square | 21 – 25 February
Aotea Square will play host to a highly creative mix of arts experiences when the biennial Auckland Fringe Festival permeates the streets and stages of Auckland. A plethora of events enlivening the square includes a Spoken Word Showcase bringing poetry slam artists from across New Zealand to Aotea square, artist Brenda Vester, creating wire sculptures to adorn the lawns; Box Wars, encouraging the public to create and destroy cardboard creations in epic battles; We May Have to Choose, provoking with a soapbox of opinions about the universe by Australian artist Emma Hall.
Live Music | 9 Jan - 24 Feb
Continuing the stellar summer lineup, February includes notable artists such as thrash metal band Alien Weaponry, performing in both te reo Māori and English; the esoteric and melodic performer Ben Salter; psychedelic punk band Wukong The Monkey King, who fuse jams together in Mandarin and English; the 11-piece, brass-heavy groovers Ijebu Pleasure Club; and renowned Japanese ‘avant-pop’ ensemble Hikashu.

The ever-popular 95bFM Kids Show brings a special extended edition to Aotea Square. Join host Lee and a cast of his weird and wonderful friends for stories and songs, live on Sunday 19 February, from 7am – 11am! The Snot-Gobbler puppet show will have children enraptured on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 February at 11am. While you’re there check out The Imagination Playground, a set of large blue foam blocks which gives children the opportunity to enjoy endless play, construction and invention, for hours of daily fun from 11am – 6pm.
