Finn Andrews releases new single 'Love, What Can I Do'
/Finn Andrews (of The Veils) releases the first taste of new music from his first and forthcoming solo effort, 'One Piece At A Time' (details TBA). The track, titled ‘Love, What Can I Do? is the first song off the record and is but a taster of things to come.
The song was recorded entirely live without Andrews wearing headphones, as he wanted it to feel as much like playing a live show as possible. The dramatic opening chord was taught to Andrews by his father Barry Andrews (XTC, League Of Gentlemen) recorded at The Lab in Auckland and produced by Finn and Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins).
"My dad often teaches me a weird piano chord when he comes to visit; I always ask for new ones because I’m still kind of a beginner on piano. It’s a cool little chord, and I thought it was appropriate to start with a chord from my father. I feel like there is something I have been trying to do for a long time in this song. All the vocals are done live, which is something I’ve tried to do with The Veils but things always seem to end up getting cut up” - Finn Andrews.
Since signing a record deal at the tender age of 16, Finn Andrews and his band The Veils have released five albums together. They’ve appeared in David Lynch’s reboot of Twin Peaks, as well as on soundtracks by luminary film directors Tim Burton and Paolo Sorrentino. Finn was also recently commissioned by the Belgian government to write a 20-minute orchestral piece to commemorate the antipodean dead of World War I.
It was while writing 2016’s 'Total Depravity' that the New Zealand-raised musician realised a different streak was beginning to emerge. Fuelled by the end of a relationship, Andrews took some time out from London and from The Veils, and returned to New Zealand to begin work on his first solo album, 'One Piece At A Time'.
