This Way North share new single 'Make It Work'
/A sharp guitar hook leading into a psych- rock world that meets a tantalising and powerful ending, with lo-fi drumming and crunchy psych guitar. ‘Make It Work’, the newest single from This Way North, is a song that explores the drive, sweat, tears and hard work that goes into making a passion project come to life, whether that be music, art, sport or business.
The band put their experiences of being independent creatives into this single, recorded in Toronto, Canada (where the pair met) with producer Derek Downham (Eagles of Death Metal, Broken Social Scene). Witnessing first hand the compelling drive, determination and often-thankless hard work that goes into being an independent worker in any field. They were inspired to try and capture the optimism and strong mind-set that people carry with them through the ups and downs that come and go. Looking to many of the creatives they had met and worked alongside this year including filmmaker Agostino Soldati, artist and graphic designer Kirrily Anderson and countless independent musicians.
They release this single with a special live studio film clip, again returning to work with Shane O’Mara (Tim Rogers, Pony Face) at his Yikesville studio and filmed by Agostino Soldati (Cosmic Psychos, Gossling, Saint Jude).
This Way North are Melbourne based Cat Leahy and Leisha Jungalwalla, a guitar and drum two piece with a deceptive and powerful full band sound, at home on stage whether that be at a festival or a dive bar. 2017 has seen This Way North tour Australia, New Zealand twice and Canada. Playing over 100 shows this year reaching remote, regional and city areas alike. From dive bars making packed in party-goers heave and sweat, to festival stages alongside some of the biggest acts in the world. They played festivals such as Wide Open Space, a couple hundred k’s outside of Alice Springs - sharing the stage with Hiatus Coyote in their only 2017 show, surrounded by the stunning McDonald Ranges; Dawson City Music Festival in the Yukon 200kms south of the artic circle in Canada where the sun doesn’t go down in summer and they party all night long. As well as Atmosphere Gathering on the stunning Vancouver Island with indie darlings Half Moon Run (CAN). This Way North have also supported the likes of Turin Breaks (UK) on their Blues Fest side shows and The Jerry Cans (CAN) from the Tundra in far North Eastern Canada on their Port Fairy Folk fest side shows.
This Way North made it to New Zealand twice this year to both islands and making waves in all venues and towns they visited. Playing Kiwi institutions such as Meow in Wellington, Blue Smoke in Christchurch, Wunderbar in Lyttleton and The Wine Cellar in Auckland and pairing up with local acts such as Emily Fairlight, Paprika Jones, Anxiety Club and Jed Parsons.
They will return to New Zealand shores early next year with the release of their second EP.
