Musician/composer/producer Nathan Haines returns with ‘Just Holdin’ On (Instrumental)’, a standalone single lifted from the upcoming NOTES (DELUXE EDITION) - an expanded re-release featuring edits, remixes, and live versions from Haines’ album NOTES.

Stripping away the vocals of the original, the instrumental version puts the composition’s architecture in sharp focus - a downtempo, chilled hip-hop pulse, boom-bap drums from Marc Mac (4 Hero), and a lush Rhodes progression by Michal Martyniuk. With the space cleared, Haines’ saxophone and flute melodies step to the fore, long-line phrases and subtle harmonics that underline the tune’s mood of quiet momentum.

Featuring a dynamic blend of live instrumentation and electronic elements, NOTES (DELUXE EDITION) reflects Haines’ lifelong commitment to pushing musical boundaries. Expanded with remixes, instrumentals, and live recordings alongside the original studio album, the collection shows how these songs shift across contexts: in the studio, on the dancefloor, and live on stage. The release captures three stunning performances from Haines’ sold-out Auckland album release show at the legendary Powerstation, which shows Haines and his band in full flight. It stands as a definitive companion to NOTES and the most complete portrait of Haines’ sound to date.

About Nathan Haines: Haines’ acclaimed career has to date seen him release 10 albums and countless collaborations, highlighted by his classic albums SHIFT LEFT, SQUIRE FOR HIRE and SOUND TRAVELS. A multiple-time Jazz Album of the Year winner, Haines has spent his musical life at the forefront of both electronic and jazz music in NZ and beyond.

Haines’ list of collaborators over his storied career includes Damon Albarn, Marlena Shaw, Mark de Clive Lowe and the NZ Symphony Orchestra, alongside current collaborators Flamingo Pier, Frank Booker and Chaos in the CBD. Nathan Haines is an artist who is pushing the boundaries of both electronic and jazz music, and is celebrated in both circles.
