Off the back of a relentless 12-month release and touring schedule, Yugambeh/Gold Coast-based duo, Bootleg Rascal, have just revealed their brooding number 'Street Shark' - co-written with long time friends Seamus Coyle and Freddy Crabs (Sticky Fingers).
The track is the final cut before their self-titled album (due October 29) - produced by Caleb Tasker (The Terrys, Rum Jungle) and mixed by Ian Pritchett (Angus and Julia Stone, Boo Seeka).
Taking cues from the likes of Massive Attack, Gorillaz and MGMT, 'Street Shark' shines a light on a more introspective side of the band's repertoire. A hypnotic and poignant slow burn, the single layers lush, airy instrumentation with deft precision, all brought to life by the endearing and dream-soaked vocals of front man Carlos Lara. The band harness dynamics with finesse, gradually building toward a soaring crescendo outro, where ethereal guitars and arpeggiated synths swirl into a mesmeric finale.Guitarist Jimmy Young talks about the themes behind the track:
"'Street Shark' feels like one of our more sombre tracks. It touches on self-reflection and those moments where you might feel like a bit of a loner or even a bit of a piece of sh*t. But it's not all negative - it's also about taking the good with the bad and making the best out of hard situations. It's about accepting yourself for who you are, while feeling nostalgic about the good times that have passed. All those themes are tied up in the song."Alongside the track comes its accompanying music video, shot and directed by Hamish Stephen (Freddy Crabs, Danté Knows) across Eora/Sydney's Inner West and CBD. Echoing the themes of the song, the clip explores lonerism and self-discovery, while also evoking moments of hope and nostalgia amidst life's inevitable ups and downs.
The band is currently touring Australia and New Zealand, featuring a mix of free entry shows, ticketed events, and headlining festivals Oktoberfest at Polytech Stadium, and Dunedin Beer Festival at Forsyth Barr Stadium.
This follows on from their nationwide Australian 'BOOTY BLOCK PARTY' tour and tremendous 'Steppin Round The World' tour of New Zealand, and the UK/EU, including stops in France, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and England. Additionally, they've played festivals such as Salty Hops, Live At The Pines, Winter Wine, and Spaced Out, and supported reggae legends Steel Pulse (UK).
