Rising alt-indie-pop sensation CRYSTAL is back with a bang!
The Pōneke-raised, Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist has today released her new single ‘Make It Up To You’ - CRYSTAL’s first new music in more than six months and a sign of more to come!
The perfect soundtrack to the last days of summer ‘Make It Up To You’ is a power anthem that sparkleswith CRYSTAL’s signature edgy pop sonics.
Also, in keeping with CRYSTAL’s focus on authenticity in songwriting, ‘Make It Up To You’ reflects real life.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about this one friendship I had been neglecting because I had slowly become obsessed with my music priorities in an all-consuming toxic way. I wrote this song to apologise for being a shitty friend and ever since then I've put a lot more effort into my friendships and I’ve been a lot happier. Tell your friends you love them! Make time! Life’s too short to be on a miserable, solo pursuit.”
“It reflects my love for storytelling and delves into my own real-life problems and situations which are important for me to address - as they are universal and part of growing up,” says CRYSTAL.
This sentiment is captured perfectly in the accompanying video - a passion project between CRYSTAL and her best friend from high school, Myles Knowles.
“We wanted to create a world which was colourful and fun and encompassed my love for suburbia and card making. I love how it feels like a mini film and I really enjoyed planning it all and seeing all our ideas come to life,” says CRYSTAL.
CRYSTAL co-wrote the song with Sarah McManus and Xavier Dunn, who did the first round of production on the track. She finished it with top Kiwi producer Harry Charles, who has worked with the likes of Dove Cameron, Sycco, Peach PRC and Alisa Xayalith.
‘Make It Up To You’ is just the start of a big year planned for CRYSTAL, who has been making a name for herself in Aotearoa’s alternative pop space. Keep watching - this is only the beginning!
