Live Music News - Morning People celebrates 10 years with Auckland Town Hall takeover Saturday 30 May - 21st May 2026
After a decade of transforming mornings across Aotearoa into packed-out sunrise dancefloors, Morning People returns for their 10th Birthday at the iconic Auckland Town Hall this May for a rare large-scale Saturday takeover this New Zealand Music Month featuring a special DJ set from Tiki Taane alongside Morning People founder Jamie Newman.
What began in 2016 as a slightly absurd proposition – dancing before work, sober, at sunrise – has since become one of Aotearoa’s most enduring independent event success stories. Long before wellness culture became mainstream, Morning People was building community around early starts, sound systems, collective energy, and the simple novelty of feeling good before 9am.
“Morning People started as a simple experiment – dancing sober and injecting a bit of fun before work. Ten years on, what stands out most is the community that has grown around it – the friendships, connections and people who kept turning up, and helped shape it into what it is today.” – Jamie Newman, Founder, Morning People
Over the past decade, the independently operated event series has transformed warehouses, rooftops, parks, and civic spaces into euphoric early-morning gatherings across the country, platforming emerging local talent alongside internationally recognised DJs and key figures within Aotearoa’s music culture. In doing so, Morning People has created a unique performance environment – as much a shift for the artists on stage as it is for the audiences on the dancefloor.
Now, for one of its biggest celebrations to date, Morning People returns to Auckland Town Hall – for an ambitious one-off production featuring towering sound, immersive lighting, and hundreds of dancers filling one of the city’s most striking civic spaces before brunch.
Alongside the music, attendees can expect complimentary coffee from Altezano Brothers, All Good bananas and Karma Drinks – long-standing Morning People rituals that have remained part of the experience since the earliest events.
Supported by Auckland Live as part of New Zealand Music Month, Morning People’s 10th Birthday marks both a celebration of its decade-long legacy and a reminder that some of the most enduring cultural spaces are the ones built on openness, presence, and shared experience.
Ten years on, Morning People remains committed to starting the day the best way it knows how – together, on a dancefloor, before the rest of the city wakes up.
