“…One call I turn white…don’t you think I’ve been through enough…”
Tāmaki Makaurau singer-songwriter ZOË VERA today releases a contemplative and highly affecting new track ‘White’, off her upcoming five-track EP LIVE HARDER, due out Friday 24th April.
“I wrote ‘White’ during a time in my life where I felt like life’s punching bag. I thought maybe that’s all my life would be. I was experiencing one blow after another. I couldn’t catch a break. Though external things out of my control kept happening, making music is something that will always be mine. Song-writing holds power.” – ZOË VERA
An ethereal, haunting track, ‘WHITE’ is a reflective, pensive tune pairing a sparse, atmospheric production with lyrics exploring emotional overwhelm and the physicality of trauma experienced - a combination that provides the perfect backbone to this song of quiet strength.
Intimate and delicate in vibe, ‘White’ paints a raw picture of emotional exhaustion and the invisible struggle to stay afloat during an emotional crisis, balancing melancholic, dark fragility with a sense of calm self-awareness and subtle defiance.
A song of internalised pain, ‘White’ offers the listener optimism through its overriding theme of resilience and defiant hope. That to move past triggering events and making a necessary emotional shift from passive suffering to active protection is possible – ‘White’ is like an exhaled breath before retreating into a much-needed silence and inner calm.
Says Zoë: “It’s a song about the quiet breaking point from experiencing blow after blow and repeated set-backs, when you’re already barely holding yourself together. It explores the feelings of being emotionally swamped, that you’re a burden to everyone, and the sheer exhaustion from having to be resilient for so long. All the while feeling unable to reach out for help, despite the struggle being visible to those around you.”
The fourth release off her upcoming 5-track EP Live Harder, ‘White’ follows previous tracks ‘Good Enough’, ‘Twelve Feet Under’ and stand-out pop single ‘Dizzying’, which landed on that weeks’ Rolling Stone Best NZ Music of the Week list.
The Live Harder EP was produced by highly respected musician Danny McCrum, and delves into her experience with trauma and the intense journey of rebuilding her life, which allows her to draw on a profound well of strength and survival to inform her lyricism.
With a sound that leans into musicality, sophistication and creative substance Zoë Vera is an unconventional pop artist, fearlessly carving her own musical path to emerge as an exciting new presence on the New Zealand music scene.
Set to further build on the widespread radio airplay and industry acclaim received to date, Zoe Vera has quickly become an artist to watch - look out for Live Harder, out 24th April!
