Vance Joy today releases ‘Fascination in the Dark’, the twin track to recently released ‘Divine Feelings’. Both songs are now available as a double A-side titled Divine Feelings/Fascination in the Dark, marking the much-loved, Australian singer-songwriter’s most anticipated release since his last album In Our Own Sweet Time (2022).

This music was born from a time both glorious expansion and quiet slowing down, through which Vance Joy married his dream girl, moved to Barcelona and welcomed his first child. Like ‘Divine Feelings’, ‘Fascination in the Dark’ also documents a first meeting - though one of a different shade. It’s about locking eyes with someone in the haze of a night out and feeling an instant spark; unsure about where the connection will go but ready to find out. “Through the smoke, the wine, the thick conversation/ The pure persuasion, could you be my salvation?” Vance Joy sings about that elusive someone you feel drawn to, energy crackling across a dark bar. It's a song born to be played live, a classic rock track made stadium-sized with horns and a singalong chorus.

The accompanying visual, again directed by Bill Bleakley (W.A.M Bleakley), is the prelude to ‘Divine Feelings’ - the first chance meeting for our modern Australian Bonnie and Clyde. The storyline follows Erana James (We Are Dangerous, The Wilds, The Changeover) into an outback gas station. With a balaclava-covered face, she passes Tom Wilson (Heartbreak High, Latecomers, Ladies In Black). They lock eyes before she robs the gas station and leaps into his car to make an escape. What unfolds is a fast-paced, hedonistic love story against a stunning Outback backdrop, the final shot recognisable as the opening sequence for ‘Divine Feelings’.

“Aside from our two amazing stars Erana James and Tom Wilson, all of our cast members worked in the stores/ restaurants/ motels that we filmed them in. Although we had a solid plan for both of these clips, we ended up improvising most of these scenes which made the filming process really exciting.

“The people who supplied the Mustang were a really nice retired local couple. They were very keen to help out and on the first day of shooting they arrived an hour early, brought their son and granddaughter and set up chairs and watched us make the video. By the end of the shoot, they were pretty much part of the crew and were helping out with rigging the camera to their car and stunt driving.” - W.A.M Bleakley

Released only four weeks ago, ‘Divine Feelings’ has quickly and easily worked its way into hearts across the globe. Already tallying millions of streams, its release has seen Vance Joy return to cover star status on Spotify’s New Music Friday AU&NZ and Breaking Hits, plus Apple Music’s Today’s Hits. It’s also been warming the airwaves of triple j and commercial radio networks locally, breaking into the Top 20 of Shazam’s 200 and trending upwards on Spotify’s Viral 50 for Australia.

During the release of these two fresh singles, Vance Joy has been wreaking his own kind of havoc across North America, playing shows with his band to sold out crowds and surprising fans with intimate, pop-up pub gigs (O’Reilly’s in St Johns, Old Mates Pub in New York, Spinster Abbots in St Augustine) with one final performance in LA tonight at a surprise location. Followers across the tour have been the first to hear these new songs - with the call and response of ‘Fascination in the Dark’ being a particularly unifying moment.

After his North American Tour, Vance Joy will return to the familiar shores of Australia to play Harvest Rock Festival in Adelaide on 25 October. While a new album is on the horizon, fans for now can dive into this gorgeous pair of releases to revel in those most heady of human emotions – the possibility of new connection, the flickers of first romance and the thrill of looking towards the future at what just might be.
