Ahead of his forthcoming album In The Mids out April 10th, Sola Rosa unveils new single ‘Losing Time’, a collaboration with ascending Berlin based Aotearoa artist Muroki.
Driven by an irresistible bassline, ‘Losing Time’ is a groove-forward track with 70’s inspired horns and a gentle funk pulse that accelerates a feeling of restlessness, carried further by the touch of Muroki’s signature warmth and rhythm.
“I first heard Muroki when I took my daughters to see BENEE live - he was the support act and instantly stood out,” says Spraggon. “Not long after I heard one of his songs on the radio and reached out about working together. It turned out he was already a fan of a track from my last album.”
The pair soon linked up in the studio, with Muroki drawn to the beat that would become ‘Losing Time’.
The song’s inspiration is rooted in the universal tension many Kiwis feel between staying home and venturing out into the wider world - a theme that resonates strongly with Muroki’s own move to Berlin. This reflective undercurrent gives ‘Losing Time’ a poignant, almost cinematic quality, grounding its infectious groove in real-life experience.
“We talked about how a lot of Kiwis feel the pull to leave home and explore the world. That idea became the basis for the lyrics. At the time, Muroki was about to move to Berlin, where he now lives, so the song ended up reflecting that moment pretty naturally.” Sola Rosa
With In The Mids, Sola Rosa signals a renewed focus on production, tone and forward motion - an album shaped for movement, late nights and considered listening, reaffirming Spraggon’s place as one of New Zealand’s most enduring and quietly innovative musical voices for the past 25 years.
