Mirror Rain, the third single from Just Janie’s debut album Mythology of the Girls (for release in May 2026 for NZ Music Month), is out now in April 2026 and is both a personal love letter, anecdote, and reaction to earlier songs about wellbeing.
“I read somewhere that the rain mimics the identity of the sky and thought this was a beautiful metaphor for human beings. I’d gone through a deeply heartbreaking relationship breakdown, where I tried to be a version of myself. Sometimes we lose ourselves a little along the way. Sometimes we are the rain, mimicking the sky. But we can find ourselves again.” says Janie.
Just Janie is emerging as a compelling new voice in Aotearoa indie folk. Hailing from Central Otago, Janie grew up writing songs tucked beneath the Hawkdun Ranges. Stepped in the golden warmth of the sixties and seventies, Just Janie’s music is a captivating and tender menagerie of storytelling and song.
‘If you find yourself… daydreaming about Laurel Canyon, it might be the perfect time for Just Janie’ - The Spinoff
Mythology of the Girls is a new era for Just Janie. A reaction to nostalgia through a modern lens, the album pays homage to the folk scene of the late sixties and early seventies.
“As someone deeply nostalgic for the sixties and seventies from a musical standpoint (think Joni Mitchell and the Crosby Stills and Nash jamming at house parties in Laurel Canyon), I was interested in women's stories, mirrored by my own personal anecdotes and experiences. The women who walked so we could run. I was intrigued to consider the women's experiences that led to a change, a change that modern women can benefit from. We have a long way to go, but we have come so far. The first two singles Mythology of the Girls, and Cielo Drive, are sister songs, considering this nostalgia and the women's stories who have become entwined” said Janie.
‘Known for her mesmerising live performances, Just Janie has been described as an artist who “made me laugh, cry, and fall in love on the first song’ — David Milligan, Ōtautahi
Tracking the entire album via an analogue pathway to tape at Sublime Studio allowed Janie and her band to sonically replicate an era that inspired the music.
“You can almost hear me grinning in those songs, looking through the window of my sound booth at my drummer, guitarist and bass player. It was such a magic way to record and allowed us to capture the atmosphere.’”
Just Janie is carving a path as one to watch. Having performed at Sanctuary Sounds in Hawkes Bay this summer, she secured a spot as a Tussock Music Festival artist for 2026, and is hitting the road this May, touring her album nationwide.
