Country Meets Celtic: ‘Hometown Therapy’ is the Comfort Song We Need
DEBUT ALBUM HOMETOWN THERAPY DUE OUT FRIDAY 7th NOVEMBER
Emerging Scottish-born, Aōtearoa-based musician and singer-songwriter KARRA RHODES delivers a soul-soothing ode with her new track ‘Hometown Therapy’, the title track off her upcoming debut album of the same name.
For Karra Rhodes, stepping into the spotlight was never the plan. A lawyer, mother of two young children, and now country-pop artist, Karra reveals that for much of her life she shied away from attention, admitting: “Being vulnerable or standing in front of people used to feel terrifying, I never imagined I would be the one holding the microphone.”
But with the release of her latest single ‘Hometown Therapy’ and the announcement of her debut album due for release in just four weeks, Karra is proving that sometimes the very things we fear most can become the source of our greatest strength. Now Karra steps forward boldly, with her words and her songs to reveal, comfort, sooth and heal.
Not afraid to tackle subjects many artists avoid, Karra’s writing spans the raw truths of domestic violence, mental health, identity and resilience, offering listeners both vulnerability and strength. Her experiences have helped shape her flair for creating emotive melodies and lyrics into every song, delivering music that resonates with authenticity and depth.
A nostalgic track that blends country storytelling with Scottish Celtic influences, ‘Hometown Therapy’ reflects her roots in Scotland and her life in New Zealand. The song captures the feeling of longing for home, childhood memories, and the comforting familiarity of the past.
Says Karra: “It’s a song for anyone living away from their home, anyone missing their childhood, or anyone feeling nostalgic – this is a song for you. It’s about capturing those quiet, bittersweet moments that stay with you, and turning them into something soothing and comforting.”
Produced by acclaimed Welsh Producer Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Melanie C, Opshop, The Chills), the single and title track of Karra’s debut album, ‘Hometown Therapy’ is part of a body of work that lays everything bare – the struggles, the healing, and identity battles – told with grit, heart and unapologetic honesty.
Giving back is also a big element of Karra’s journey with her upcoming album, and she plans to donate 100% of proceeds of both her album release show at Christchurch’s Rolling Stone on 15 November, and all streaming royalties from her album for one year to domestic violence charity Shine.
And in a truly collaborative move, Karra’s music publishers Big Pop Publishing will also match any royalties donated by Karra, as an extension of her support of domestic violence victims and her pledge to Shine.
Say Karra: “On a really personal note, Shine were literally the ones who helped lead me out of a very dangerous and horrible situation, so it’s my turn to try and raise money to give back and show them just how far their works goes into getting people out of those situations. Also every day in my line of work as a family lawyer, I am often working with domestic violence victims, so it just feels right that this is what I want my music to do, it kind of connects everything in a full circle.”
Joining Karra at her album release charity fundraiser show will be country-rock acoustic duo Goodnight Goldy and talented 11-year-old country singer Cleo Fitzgerald, the 2025 Junior Overall Winner at the NZ Golden Guitar Awards.
Living proof that you can chase every dream, the accomplished songwriter, mother, and lawyer works hard at balancing family, a legal career, and a nurturing a growing music journey has not been easy, but for this determined young woman, it has been worth every moment.
Says Karra: “Life is busy, but music has always been my passion. I want to show my kids that you do not have to give up on your dreams, you can chase them alongside everything else. I really try to live by the whole ‘do a little, a lot’…. maxim.”
A standout addition to the country-pop landscape, Karra is ready to carve her path in the industry, her perfect amalgam of magnetic tunes and highly relatable lyrics clearly makes her one to watch. Listen out for the full debut album due to be released on Friday 7th November!
