One of the most powerful voices in Aotearoa music, Deva Mahal, is teasing a new project with the release of the devastatingly beautiful single ‘Sometimes Good’.

Sultry and sexy, ‘Sometimes Good’ captures the vulnerability and depth of Deva’s songwriting and showcases her unmistakable, jaw-dropping vocal. It also comes with a potent message.

“People can fool you for only so long before you see past their 20 percent. This is for all the people who have held onto something or someone that wasn't good for you. For those who accepted the breadcrumbs instead of waiting for the whole damn meal,” says Deva.

“We all wanna be loved and find real connection and it's out there to find once we stop accepting the bare minimum. Sometimes... they are just a bad person... who's sometimes good.”

Deva started writing ‘Sometimes Good’ when she was living in New Orleans but only finished it last year. “It took me until last year to find all the words I wanted to say. It's like it took me that long to get to the truth of what I wanted to say. To write the letter to myself, I needed to hear,” she says.

‘Sometimes Good’ is the latest in a series of singles released by Deva as she builds to revealing her highly-anticipated new EP, created alongside Christchurch-born producer and artist Chris Wethey, as well as Andy Kravitz (Grammy Album of the Year nominee for his work on Andre 3000’s new album). The EP is due out in 2026 and includes the already-released APRA Silver Scroll 2025 finalist ‘South Coast’ and the steamy R&B ballad ‘Need’.

The project features collaborations with London-based writer/producer Estère, producer/guitarist Ashton Sellars, Latin Grammy Award-winning band Flor de Toloache (Mireya Ramos, Chey Fiol), Alan Markley, Jacob Bills, Lydia Cole, Iris Little, and London pianist Ollie Rockberger (Laura Mvula). Stay tuned on Deva’s socials for news on the upcoming release and for touring dates.
