Landmvrks have never performed in New Zealand before, so to have their debut Aotearoa performance at Spark Arena is an awesome feat. Papa Roach have come a long way from opening for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers well over 20 years ago back in 2002, to playing the last ever Westfest in 2015 and coming back again with co-headliners The Used just three years ago and blowing the roof off the Trusts Arena. A Day To Remember were here just last year with Hatebreed at the Powerstation, a much smaller, more intimate venue than tonight’s setting of Spark Arena. With three big acts, each with their own dedicated following, we were in for a big night!

An hour before doors were due to open, long queues, a sea of black clothing, stretched and almost encroached on the roadways. Merch lines were buzzing with chatter. Fans had a multitude of apparel to choose from. Even strolling along, Quay Street was sprinkled with freshly purchased merchandise.

Having only heard of Landmvrks by name, I didn’t know what to expect. As small as their set was, their stage presence was anything but. The lead singer, Florent Salfati, utilises the entirety of the large stage on offer. Florent has incredible vocals, seamlessly switching between screams and softer vocals. The crowd absolutely loved them!

Papa Roach hit the ground running, starting off strong with one of their latest releases, Even If It Kills Me. Jacoby told the crowd, ‘Let me see your horns in the sky!’, and of course they obliged. The energy was high and this was expressed with screams and Jacoby stating, ‘We’re gonna have a hell of a night!’

We reached Dead Cell, some very early work from the band; it also appears on my personal favorite soundtrack, Queen Of The Damned. The call and response was well received. By now the crowd were well and truly hyped up – and physically warmed up, thanks to the tasteful pyrotechnics.

There was a lot of crowd engagement tonight, from the wall of death during Kill The Noise, to having the crowd crouch down and jump up on command while they played Liar. This audience was his – at least for now.

We reached a point in the evening where things were slowed down. A few sombre messages regarding suicide were up upon the large screen/backdrop. This was followed by a prerecorded message from Jacoby himself, speaking out on the subject matter. This led fittingly into an emotionally heavy Leave a Light On (Talk Away The Dark). Illuminated by just the audience’s cell phone lights, everyone was watching, locked in. This was my personal favourite of the night; I am a sucker for heavy bands playing acoustics. It hits the spot. This fittingly led into Scars and Help.

Next up was a single off their upcoming album – Braindead. Jacoby then asked, ‘Where the crowd surfers at?’ and a circle pit formed. There were crowd surfers and the audience were waving their arms. It’s clear this new release is a hit.

There was a medley of nu-metal songs covered, from Korn’s Blind into Deftones’ My Own Summer (Shove It), along with Limp Bizkit’s Break Stuff, which was a hit with the crowd, into System Of A Down’s Chop Suey! Jacoby’s vocals were not needed here – the crowd had this, and he let them be.

Now it was time for the big hit to close out their set. Last Resort. They went out with a bang.

Da-da-da-da-da-da.

The crowd erupted with Da’s.

Let’s go! And so, we did.

At this point it was forgotten that it was a school night. Everyone was screaming their hearts out to The Downfall Of Us All.

Next came I’m Made Of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of? If the crowd weren’t already warmed up before, they certainly were now!

The acapella in Right Back At It Again sounded amazing, encompassing the entire arena. We reached Paranoia, and Jeremy McKinnon requested the biggest circle pit New Zealand has seen all year. The crowd happily participated, and a large circle pit appeared in the mosh.

Miracle bought the metalhead out in everyone. Large portions of attendees were headbanging simultaneously. Flowers is a great showcase of the band’s diverse talents – they're not just a heavy band, and the variety of vocals just works so well.

The entire Arena shouted ‘disrespect your surroundings’. Sound familiar? It’s become somewhat of a viral soundbite taken from Mr Highway’s Thinking About The End.

Next up was LeBron. This calls for lots of audience participation. Basketball hoops were wheeled out onstage, and people attempted to make baskets with inflatable basketballs. A vote was held to decide the winner, stage left or stage right.

This next song never gets played, we were told. They stopped playing it for 10 years and had to relearn it. Jeremy jokingly commented it had been renamed to New Zealand Legion Iced Tea.

Acknowledgements of the support acts were shared. Landmvrks were well received with applause. And for the ‘Iconic, legendary Papa Roach’, whoos arise. Then we got some vocals with a hint of guitar. The audience already knew this one, All I Want.

After The Plot To Bomb The Panhandle, we are asked about encores and if we like them. The crowd disagreed and Jeremy exclaimed, ‘Fuck encores! We’re just gonna play you three more songs!’ The arena was once again illuminated by cell phone torches, accompanied by acoustic guitars, as we launched into If It Means Alot To You. There were couples swaying in each other’s arms. The confetti canons kicked in – back to the heavy stuff.

Our last song was screamed back with everything the audience had left to give – All Signs Point To Lauderdale. There were makeshift streamers (read, toilet paper) being thrown from the stage and about the arena, followed by actual streamers. The crowd swiftly dispersed, and there was no waiting for an encore we had already been informed was not coming. It had since rained and taxis lined the street, but everyone was happy, high on the energy from tonight's performance.
