Artist: The Teskey Brothers

Date / Venue: Thursday March 1st, 2018 - The Tuning Fork, Auckland

If it wasn’t mentioned The Teskey Brothers band were from Australia, I honestly thought that they flew in from America, treating us to some true Blues and Soul sounds, from a time where you can imagine Otis Redding singing and wailing deep emotions, BB King pouring out his blues and troubles, Stevie Vaughn haunting the background with guitar playing with those good old heartbeat felt Blues.

The Tuning Fork bar and music venue had the pleasure of these Australian soul brothers, playing some blues. Taking us back to a place where their music is soulfully slotted into the American heartland. The band is a tight, four piece band, 12 years playing gigs together, all sharing writing duties on songs. Lead Singer Josh Teskey has that worn old smokey bar drinking voice, that makes you feel the pain in the song, also plays a mean Harmonica, on Lead Guitar Sam Teskey, Brendon love on Bass, yes thats his real name, born for the blues and soul with a name like that. Finally Liam Gough on drums.

Throughly enjoyed the evening proceedings, that feeling of Motown seeping in from the 1960’s, at times rejoicing in the Funk infusion that pops in now and then. Classic blues feeling lyrics, from song likes ‘Misery and Pain’, Shiny Moon’ “…I love my Baby I cant tell you the reason why”. “Louisa” the big clap along song of the evening.

The Teskey Brothers play a show with a music journey, playing into the moments of breakdowns, silencing  the mood, for you to captivate into the groove, stripped down to vocal only Joe Cocker like A cappella, Harmonica playing, those slow jamming beats from the bass and drums, the lead guitar slowly kicking back in and building back the band into full swing. It was great to have that rare old treat of feeling some good ole’ blues and soul. The Teskey Brothers highly recommended.
