Concert Review: Billie Eilish - Wednesday 24th 2019
By Teylor Moss
Artist: Billie Eilish
Date / Venue: Wednesday April 24th, 2019 - Spark Arena, Auckland
Billie has taken the world by storm since her debut single "Ocean Eyes" in 2016. Since then she has been showcasing her incredible talent, releasing hit after hit. All in her own unique style, staying true to herself. Billie released her first album When We All fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? on March 29th 2019 and is bringing it to life on tour. After her remarkable performance at Coachella last week, Billie is bringing the first leg of her tour to New Zealand. Tickets sold in record time and after high demand, more tickets were released, but still the show sells out! Accompanying her on stage is drummer Andrew and her brother Finneas, one talented man, who plays piano, guitar, bass and has an incredible voice. Finneas helps write Billie’s songs and produces them as well!
Finneas starts the show, performing his very own music in a beautiful half hour set. Jumping between, keys and guitar, all while gliding across the stage with ease. The crowd was in love and singing along with him, hyping themselves up for the incomparable Billie Eilish.
During the intermission between the acts, I saw three people get carried out of the crowd and one small fight break out, all before Billie came on stage! The security was so helpful and tending to everyone by handing them cups of water constantly and spraying the crowd to cool them down. It was quite a long intermission (about half an hour/ forty minutes) and the crowd was getting restless.
Suddenly the lights go out and the crowd is screaming, loud. A cool creepy animation appears on screen while Finneas and Andrew emerge on stage and assume their positions. Billie runs on stage immediately after and the crowd loses their minds, 10,000 people screaming at the top of their lungs.
Opening with her latest hit Bad Guy, Billie has the most energy I've ever seen, leaping across the stage and jumping like she was trying to break through the floor. She has the most incredibly angelic voice you will ever hear, even while she's running across the stage. The lung capacity is insane. Billie was dancing like she was in her bedroom and didn't care who was watching, pouring her heart and soul into her entire performance.
She emitted a light in the arena, you could only be happy and excited to be there and go crazy for the night. The crowd was matching her energy and Billie was gagged at how crazy the crowd was going
"Is this a dream, this is crazy. My dreams be trippin' sometimes".
Billie continued with her set playing all of her hits, such as: Lovely, Ocean Eyes, Bury a Friend... I could go on. She sung until she dropped on the floor and lay down, then continued to sing some more, not stopping until she gave us everything she had.
The sound was incredible, there were no faults and everyone in the crew was in sync, even when a water bottle tipped over (lid on) crew would run on stage and put it back in place, or catch Billie’s jacket she took off before it reached the floor. I've never seen a more organized show and it really makes a huge impact.
Tonight had to be one of my favourite shows ever, I was not prepared for how amazing Billie was going to be, she truly blew me away. I will be talking about this concert to everyone.
I was so impressed with the organisation, and I loved how they had the music videos playing in the background. If you ever get the chance to see Billie Eilish perform live, go buy tickets! I promise you will not regret it.
