The Lemonheads
By Megan Moss
Artist: The Lemonheads
Date / Venue: Wednesday December 17th, The Tuning Fork, Auckland
Evan Dando; of Boston's Lemonheads is often referred to as a "loveable rouge..." and the shoe absolutely fits, looking entirely scruffy & like every good indie / rock frontman should, dishevelled, elegantly wasted & half asleep... I wouldn't have expected anything less & we were treated to an hour and a half of melodic, punky Lemonheads classics.
I was pretty chuffed when I heard the Lemonheads were heading to Auckland on the tail of an Australian tour and keen to head out on a wet miserable night to The Tuning Fork, a scrummy intimate venue perfect for the 90's indie rock band and their diehard fans to get up and close, & take a stroll back down memory lane.
For me, it promised to be a good night, sadly; although the band were fantastic, tried their best to put on a good show for the punters, the sound problems were terrible & let the band down miserably from early in the set.
I can only imagine the bands frustration but still as I looked around, the fans who had come out to the sold out show were in their element and there was much swaying, singing clapping and applause, especially when they played their hit 'It's A Shame About Ray' and a fantastic rendition of Suzanne Vega's 'My Name Is Luka'were played.
If you're a fan and in the Wellington region, go along to their show at Bodega tonight, check them out, hopefully they get their chance tonight to leave NZ on a high & to see them again soon.
