Deap Vally - Sistrionix
By Scott Birnie
Released June 28th, 2013 - Universal
In 2011 an act arrived onto the scene delivering a powerful and unique take on blues laden heavy rock and roll. A duo born out of their love of music and crochet, they quickly escalated to the lofty heights of playing alongside the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Mumford and Sons. They have torn up the stage at some of the biggest music festivals includingLollapalooza, Coachella and Glastonbury and their momentum shows no sign of abating. This month their long awaited, highly anticipated debut album ‘Sistrionix' landed, and in the process, will cement Deap Vally's place in the upper echelon the world's rock elite.
With inspiration drawn from the likes of The White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age, vocalist/guitaristLindsey Troy and drummer Julie Edwards have peeled back the layers to reduce their sound to pure rock simplicity. Thumping drums coupled with thrashing guitar and a Joplin esque voice send ‘Sistrionix' on a path of betrayal to ambition, pain to peace and deliver an album to savour. From fan favourites ‘End Of The World' and ‘Lies' to the single release ‘Baby I Call Hell' Deap Vally have developed something so original yet so brilliantly familiar that fans of Led Zeppelin or The Who to fans of The Black Keys or The Strokes will appreciate.
This album will be remembered for all the promise and attitude that these girls exude while not straying far from a proven rock and roll formula. ‘Sistrionix' is easily the best debut album I have heard since The Libertines gave us ‘Up The Bracket' over a decade ago and for me, will be in the running for album of the year.
