Kimbra to play South Island show
New Zealand-born, international art pop superstar Kimbra is to play a one-off show near Wanaka on January 5, 2019.
The Grammy award-winning songstress is the latest major act to play in the Southern Lakes, brought to the region by Rhythm & Alps. Kimbra’s one-off NZ show takes place at the Lake Hawea Hotel, with support from Reuben Stone.
Originally hailing from Hamilton, the critically-acclaimed solo artist released her first single “Settle Down” in 2010 and since then has made major waves throughout the music industry with her eclectic music style spanning across pop, jazz, R&B and indie rock genres.
Following her Grammy award-winning success from featuring in “Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye in 2012, Kimbra has continued to build her reputation internationally and released her third studio album Primal Heart in April 2018.
With a major international tour commencing in January 2019 starting in Brazil and moving through Europe over the proceeding months, the one-off Wanaka show on January 5 will be Kimbra’s first live show in Central Otago.
“We’re so excited to be bringing Kimbra to the Southern Lakes for the first time,” Rhythm & Alps festival director Alex Turnbull says. “An act of Kimbra’s calibre is guaranteed to be a hit with so many visitors to this region over the New Year period, so we’re expecting a sell-out. It’s going to be one incredible performance.”
Rhythm & Alps has brought other major international artists to the region for one-off shows, like iconic diva Grace Jones in Queenstown in 2017 and renowned British DJ Carl Cox, who also played in Queenstown, in November this year. R&A is also bringing Australian dance group Rüfüs with local favourites Arma del Amor to the Hawea Hotel on December 28.
