First line-up announcement for The Others Way
For two years running, The Others Way has seen Auckland’s Karangahape Road transform into a paradise of local music, boasting the hottest, freshest, out-of-the-box indie, electronica, pop and more.
What’s better - it's back for another year this spring. Dust off your dancing shoes, because Flying Out is pleased to present The Others Way Festival 2017 - a unique, multi-venue festival across Auckland's K’Road on Friday 1st September 2017.
Celebrating the best in alternative music from across the country (and a few from around the globe), The Others Way features over 30 acts across eight venues for a one-stop A-Z dip into an oasis of the coolest kiwi music.
Today the first line-up is unveiled, and it’s a doozie.
Bic Runga needs little introduction. NZ music royalty, she’s a multi-award-winning artist and multi-instrumentalist whose distinct knack for writing pop gems has won her critical acclaim and fans the world over. Two decades this year since her best-selling album Drive was released, Bic is as prolific and precocious as ever. She plays at The Others Way on 1st September 2017.
A classic from the Flying Nun stable, Sneaky Feelings will bring their melodic charm to the stage at The Others Way. Formed in Dunedin in the early 1980s, the band’s multi-voiced harmonies, jangling rhythms and shared songwriting made them many fans over the years, drawing comparisons with 60s folkers The Byrds and Elvis Costello.
Lawrence Arabia (aka James Milne) fans will be more-than-stoked to see the 2017 Silver Scrolls Top 20 nominee take to K’Road to perform a cluster of pop gems. The Line of Best Fit described his fourth album, Absolute Truth (2016) as “simultaneously wistful, meandering and perfectly compact.” Another local favourite is Auckland-based chanteur, Jonathan Bree (The Brunettes, Princess Chelsea, Lil’ Chief Records) who will offer his first ever live performance; a not-to-be-missed audio-visual spectacle complete with a mighty 11-person full piece ensemble.
Vancouver three-piece The Courtneys are heading back to New Zealand hot on the heels of their widely acclaimed second album, The Courtneys II. Expect a blisteringly delightful and energy-filled from these kids. Stereogum describe their music as “bouncy, open-hearted garage-pop with a solemn spirit lurking beneath its frizzy skip”.
micronism is also resurfacing at The Others Way after a long silence, and following the recent reissue of his 1998 album inside a quiet mind, which was described as “The best electronic album ever made in this country” (Grant Smithies). They’re joined by a vast and diverse contingent of indie, alt, electronica, R&B and more - including soccerpractise, Street Chant (reuniting for the show after a brief hiatus), Disasteradio (first show in Auckland for a very long time), Yuko-Zuna, All Seeing Hand, Hex, Bespin, Hopetoun Brown, Kane Strang and Wax Chattels to name just a few. See below for the first line-up, in alphabetical order. There is much more to come!
