Classic NZ jingles to sing your way down memory lane

Ever get a catchy ad tune stuck in your head? Then prepare yourself for 20 of them…! After an award-winning season in Wellington, Jingles - The Musical will thrill Auckland audiences with a reinterpretation of classic New Zealand ad melodies – telling a hilarious story of a small-town girl perched on the edge of stardom. Jingles will be performing at Basement Theatre, Auckland from 6 June to 17 June 2017.

Wella McDonald lives in the small farming community of Rainbow’s End. After learning that her birth mother is the head of TV3, she ventures up to the big city to try to win her mother’s respect - as a weather-presenter.

Acclaimed commercials director Dean Hewison has crafted a musical comedy from our country’s catchiest ad campaigns to tell a darkly comic original story. The show features jingles from the best ads of the 80s and 90s, such as “You Can Tell a Wella Woman”, “Dancing the Columbine”, McDonalds’ “It’s Gonna be a Lovely Day”, and much more!

Musical Director Amand Gerbault-Gaylor has rearranged the original compositions to pull them into the realm of musical theatre. Honouring the true spirit of the mighty jingle, none of the lyrics have been changed – for your nostalgic pleasure. A cast of three bring Jingles to life on stage, including Auckland 2017 Billy T Award nominee comedian Paul Williams, alongside powerful songstresses Jessie Lawrence and Carrie Green. All topped off with cheese-pop choreography from ex RNZ Ballet dancer and soul-child of the 90s, Brigid Costello.

Writer and director of the show, Dean Hewison, is a winner of several Fringe awards including Best in Fringe winner and a 48HOURS film veteran including 2013’s Grand National Champion The Sleeping Plot. His films include How to Meet Girls from a Distance, Judgment Tavern (which was selected by director Lee Tamahori (Once Were Warriors) for the NZ’s Best section of the NZIFF), and the comedy-special On the Conditions and Possibilities of Hilary Clinton Taking Me as Her Young Lover.

Winner of three NZ Fringe Awards including Best Musical and Best Comedy, Jingles – The Musical will transport audiences into the very best of NZ Ad-land for a hilarious night of flashbacks and toe tapping chuckles.
