Tom Cunliffe to open for Tony Joe White's NZ shows
Auckland songwriter Tom Cunliffe will open for Swamp King Tony Joe White at both Tuning Fork shows on Sunday 9 & Monday 10 April.
Tom mixes wild hair-raising tales of lust, revelry and death with sweeter, thoughtful odes in his take on alt-country/folk-rock. Occasionally likened to The Waterboys, Van Morrison or Townes Van Zandt, Tom’s writing often steps out of that world, drawing comparisons to Bacharach for his surprising melodies or Warren Zevon and Father John Misty for his wordplay.
Tom’s debut Howl and Whisper was released in 2016 and was praised for its diverse songwriting, gravitas and maturity. Recorded at the Sitting Room under the supervision of producer Ben Edwards (Marlon Williams, Nadia Reid, Aldous Harding) the album spent several weeks in the NZ album top 20 charts on its release and received glowing reviews in the Listener and Radio NZ among others.
Tom has since toured the country, performed at the Southern Fork Americana Festival and played support for acts such as Eb & Sparrow, Wagons and Skyscraper Stan & The Commission Flat.
