Cream of young Auckland talent takes to the stage in December
Over 220 of Auckland’s brightest young stars, aged seven to 21, take to Auckland’s Aotea Centre ASB Stage in December to present the Lloyd-Webber/Rice timeless classic Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in a strictly limited season of four schools’ and three public performances.
All NYTC productions are triple-cast to showcase the very best and this year’s three Josephs Kynan Robinson (19), Takerei Komene (17) and Cole Johnston (19) rival the three tenors with spectacular performances, a taste of which can be sampled in this specially recorded video: Published at 5pm yesterday, it is going viral – viewed 10,000 times in 24 hours, with a reach of over 20,000 on Facebook.
Directed by Jonathan Alver (Royal Shakespeare Company, NZ Opera, Shortland Street), and musically directed by James Doy (NZ Musician of the Year 2014), the National Youth Theatre Company (NYTC) production of Joseph is professionally supported by the team at Auckland Live, with spectacular lighting, a phenomenal live band, and the latest in digital set technology from Oceania LED.
The outstanding cast includes emerging talent discovered through NYTC’s Outreach programme which provides scholarships to singers, dancers and actors who might otherwise not be able to experience the joy of participating in an NYTC production.
NYTC is a charitable trust providing a place where young performers can learn and thrive, developing not only outstanding performance skills but life skills that will support them throughout their lives including confidence, teamwork and mentoring. The company has become the premiere development ground for young stars in New Zealand with alumni working both here and internationally in musical theatre, opera, television and film including graduates currently starring in School of Rock in London, and locally in Billy Elliot and Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
