Release Name - U + I
Release Date - Friday 14th February 2025
Genre - Alt-Pop
Tamaki Makaurau-based indie singer-songwriter Greta van den Brink delivers a perfectly formed indie-pop radio-banger for Valentine’s Day with ‘U + I’, an addictive, breezy summer track that is deliciously saucy, carefree and full of joy.
Singing about a perfect late-night adventure, which is equal parts chaos and charm, ‘U+I’ is light, playful, a little mischievous, and totally unapologetic about savouring the moment, even if it’s just for tonight.
An alternative pop anthem for the free-spirited, ‘U + I’ was inspired by Greta’s late-night conversations with her closest girlfriends, as they shared their lived experiences in their 20’s, meeting people on a night out with no expectations, and embracing the fun of the moment without shame.
The song ‘U + I’ isn’t about one person - it’s about a feeling of freedom and uninhibitedness, of feeling empowered, brazen and going with the flow without complicating matters. It’s for anyone who’s ever met someone and just gleefully let things unfold without overthinking it.
Greta says: “We had all felt the weight of double standards – where casual connections are celebrated for some, and criticised for others. This song is a reminder that things don’t always need to be so serious. Sometimes, it’s just about the thrill of the night, the electricity of an encounter, or maybe just the stories for the group chat.”
Working once again with her incredibly talented Producer Ethan Jupe, the song took a couple of different iterations but it always kept coming back to the light and groovy pop sound. The recording process in the studio was fun and vibrant, a vibe that is effortlessly reflected in the song.
The beautifully filmed and sassy video for ‘U + I’ was shot in a single, whirlwind day with Far Out Productions, directed by Alex Farley and produced by Melissa Shao,
A cinematic mix of seduction, chaos, and unapologetic fun, the storyline follows a girl pulling herself together post break-up – starting with a dramatic bathtub scene where she burns a photo of her ex and sloshing back a glass of red.. Channelling the energy of femme fatale Samantha from Sex and the City, she unapologetically turns maneater, meeting someone and takes charge to let things unfold without overthinking it.
“It felt refreshing to work on something fun (in content) for a change. My last couple of releases have been pretty heavy, so getting to dance around the studio with this one was such a relief. I wanted to put out a song that you can dance around the kitchen to, sing with your friends, and just feel good listening to. This one’s for the girls”, explains Greta.
Deemed one of the NZ Herald’s “2025 Ones to Watch” Greta van den Brink is an artist who refuses to be put in a box. A singer, actor, and stunt performer, Greta brings a cinematic edge to everything she creates.
Trained at Sam Neill’s drama school and with credits in major productions like The Rings of Power and Netflix’s Territory, she knows how to tell a story - whether it’s through a script, a song, or a daring stunt sequence.
Greta’s music is no different. Every track she writes feels like a scene from a movie, blending vivid imagery with melodies that stay with you long after the song ends. ‘U + I’ is the third single from this emerging singer, following singles ‘Swimming On A Spoon’ and ‘Road To Hell’, released at the end of 2024.
Her new release marks a shift into something lighter, capturing the carefree moments that make life exciting. It’s a song for dancing in your kitchen, twirling in a sundress, and feeling like the lead in your own romantic comedy.
With her signature mix of indie-pop warmth and sharp storytelling, Greta continues to carve out a space that’s entirely her own—somewhere between nostalgia, mischief, and magic. Keep your eyes peeled and ears to the ground to catch more from this unique and inspiring young artist.
