Kiwi born, London schooled musical trio Flamingo Pier have today released their new single Mazunte off their upcoming EP, Supro - coming out on August 8th.
Flamingo Pier may well be the Southern Hemisphere’s best kept secret. But with the accolades they are achieving, and unique sound that fuses electronic elements weighted lightly with tropical sounds atop, this may well be about to change.
Made up of Luke Walker (the DJ), Dom Jones and Brad Craig (the musical chops), they are currently gearing up to embark on their 2024 world tour across Aotearoa, Canada, the USA and Europe, where they will be joined by Jack Thirtle on trumpet and Isaac Chadderton on percussion.
The band’s influences pour in from all genres and directions, due to the combination of DJ and two dynamic musicians. Some of note include Masters At Work, Khruangbin, Prince, LCD Soundsystem and Soulwax.
Following the success of a string of EPs and a debut album, comes their latest single, Mazunte. As the name suggests, the track was written in the town of Mazunte in Oaxaca, Mexico, when the trio spent a week there at El Triangulo, a music studio and guest house built by their friend Quinn Lamont Luke.
“Mazunte is a funky dance floor groove that has been going down a treat in our live sets. We’re so happy to have a permanent reminder of our magical stay and the beautiful hospitality we received there”, says Luke.
As Mazunte suggests, the trio draws inspiration from their environments when creating. When talking about New Zealand, Luke shares that you can hear their kiwi influence throughout their music. “The environment influences our attitude. We’re more relaxed here. There’s a lot more just being by the ocean, in native bush, in nature. That translates into more joyful, fun, percussive music”.
The roots of the band lie in Hackney Wick, London, where they were all living in a warehouse together. After finding success throwing monthly Friday parties at a nearby café, they decided to take these parties to a wider scale, on the beautiful island of Waiheke. Originally being a one day event that attracted 700 guests, it’s still running to this day, although on a far bigger scale. The 10 year anniversary of the festival is approaching this summer, which will see it span over two ways within two weeks, on January 25th and February 8th. What’s the name of this festival? Appropriately, Flamingo Pier.
Their debut album, also appropriately titled Flamingo Pier, came out during the midst of an intense COVID-19 lockdown. The main single, being an uplifting house track entitled ‘Eternal’ showcased quite the opposite emotion that was going on at the time, but provided an escape for people living in uncertainty. Since then, their tracks have been heard on Netflix shows like Good Girls, Partner Track and The One and their numbers on Spotify are equally impressive, with two of their singles passing the 3 million streams mark.
With their experience creating around the world, Mazunte is just a snippet of the catalogue of time capsules Flamingo Pier are creating, in the form of music. Their tour, single and EP Supro come off the back of a sold-out homecoming tour in New Zealand, and will continue to prove that there’s no slowing them down.
Supro is available for pre-order via Bandcamp and Soundway Records, and pre-save on Apple Music and Spotify.
