Tim Minchin adds third Auckland show to tour
/ Ben Doy
Due to incredible demand, internationally renowned award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer TIM MINCHIN has today announced a third and final Auckland show as part of his Australasian tour of his live show BACK. Minchin has already sold out three shows in New Zealand, with this show also expected to quickly follow suit.
Billed as “Old Songs, New Songs, F*** You Songs”, hinting at a set list of material from all corners of Minchin’s eclectic – and often iconoclastic – repertoire, BACK will be Minchin’s first live show in Aotearoa in over a decade.
On the back of his New Years Eve duet with Ben Folds at the Sydney Opera House, Minchin gave a taste of some of the new material he will perform on his BACK tour when he released his brand new single ’15 Minutes’. On its debut Tim said, “Here is the first of what will hopefully be an album worth of song releases in 2019. I hope it amuses.”
As with the rest of Minchin’s tour, a portion of this show’s profits will be donated to local Auckland charity Ngā Rangatahi Toa, who work with young people that have been excluded or are on the cusp of being excluded from mainstream education. In Wellington, Minchin’s chosen charity is Arohanui Strings-Sistema, a charitable trust offering high quality music classes free of charge to vulnerable children across the cities northern suburbs.
Minchin has been celebrated globally for writing the music and lyrics for “Matilda the Musical”, which has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the last 20 years, winning a record 7 Olivier Awards, 13 Helpmann Awards and 5 Tony Awards. It continues to run in the West End and has already played in over 50 cities worldwide including a spectacular season in Auckland in 2017. He has recently starred in the ABC comedy series “Squinters” and as Friar Tuck in “Robin Hood”.
